(I’m more of an enthusiast) I’m in high school… would these books be good for me? Or do you have another suggestion?

Those books would be perfect. Learning how to use your camera and understanding what the various settings do is the best way to improve your photography.
When you step up to a DSLR you will be able to fully control every setting. It is a great idea to start understanding it all now.
If your school offers a class or has a camera club I suggest you sign up. You will learn a lot.

The Peterson books are highly recommended.
You might look at these books as well:
“Digital SLR Handbook” by John Freeman
“The Art of Digital Photography” by Joseph Meehan
You can read reviews at Just type the title or author in the Search box.
I also suggest subscribing to at least one photography magazine. My personal favorite is Shutterbug but you can check the ones at your library and decide for yourself which on you like best.
