A travel pack is basically a large battery. This allows you to use strobes in a place where there may not be an outlet, such as outside in a field. A generator, or power pack, must be plugged into the wall. They are both portable, but with the generator, you have to have it plugged in to work. The travel pack you can take anywhere with or without an outlet.

Just as an addendum, I would definitely avoid the expensive equipment if you’re not a full-time, working photographer. If you choose right, the cheaper gear can more than suffice.
